School-Based Mentoring was developed to support students who can benefit from the extra assistance. The program has a track record of increasing school performances while also building relationships. Students can be referred by teachers or counselors. Once referred, students will be matched with a trained volunteer from our community (Mentor). The Mentor will spend time throughout the school year helping with social/emotional skills, attendance, study skills, communication skills, organization, and homework completion.

High School Mentoring Program Description:
Our School-Based Mentoring program was developed to assist students who could benefit from extra assistance. In School Mentoring relationships are based upon improving academic success. Once a student is referred from his/her counselor or teacher, GV Mentors provides a volunteer High School student who has gone through an application, screening and training, to work weekly with the student. Our hope is that the students will build communication skills, improve school attendance and academic performance, as well as build a relationship with an older peer.

Creating High School Mentoring Success:
  • Each match will be one High School Mentor with one Elementary Student and they will spend an average of 1 hour per week together for the remainder of the school year from 3:30 – 4:30 pm in the Cafeteria. Snacks are provided.
  • Each match will do their best to get to know, respect, trust and communicate with each other.
  • The Mentee will share school successes, grades, test scores and needs with their Mentor.
  • The GV Mentors will notify everyone in advance if it is not possible to meet at the scheduled time.
