We encourage doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows outside of the Toronto area to apply for partial travel support. This opportunity is available through grants from the Fields Institute and the National Science Foundation. Note that awardees will need to pay for their expenses ahead of time and get reimbursed after the conference. Applicants are expected to show evidence of a serious interest in the event's subject matter, as demonstrated by coursework and project experience. We particularly encourage the participation of women and members of underrepresented minorities.
Applications for travel support should include a cover letter, which gives a brief summary of research interests and accomplishments and describes the applicant's reasons for wanting to attend the conference and mentions qualifications under the above criteria. In addition, the following is required:
The student or PDF's c.v., containing basic information such as degrees earned, current affiliations, relevant coursework and grades, and any other information the applicant feels is relevant to support their application.
NOTE: The applicant's cover letter, c.v. and any other relevant information must be included in one pdf file.
A supporting letter from the applicant's advisor or supervisor. This should only be as long as necessary to convey the relevant information. It should confirm that the applicant is a Ph.D. candidate or PDF in good standing and describe the applicant's research area. Furthermore, the letter should indicate how the applicant would benefit from attending the conference, and why the applicant is in need of a travel grant.
The maximum amount for a single award is $500 to partially cover costs of travel, accommodation, and per diem for meals. Students are strongly encouraged to secure additional funding from other sources. Funds will only be disbursed in the form of reimbursements for actual expenses. A receipt is required for any expense reimbursed (e.g. airfare and hotel receipts). The reimbursement will be sent as a cheque by mail six to eight weeks after receipt of an acceptable reimbursement form and supporting receipts. For reimbursement instructions, please refer to the Fields Institute website. http://www.fields.utoronto.ca/resources/reimbursement-claims
The Travel Grants Committee consists of F. Tall, S. Todorcevic, W. Weiss (University of Toronto); I. Farah, J. Steprans, P. Szeptycki (York University).
