Welcome!
We are a group of student researchers at Carnegie Mellon studying the use of cyber security in activism.
This survey should take 10-15 minutes to complete. Thank you for your time!
Purpose
The purpose of the study is to understand the following:
- the tools that activists use to secure different aspects of their work
- how usable activists find the tools
- contextual information - such as technical ability and work that they do - that drive use of privacy and security tools
Procedure
The survey involves a combination of multiple choice and short response questions that should take 10-15 minutes to complete. To enter a raffle in which someone may win one of six $50 Amazon gift cards, participants must complete the full set of questions in this survey. Participants may withdraw from the study at any time by simply closing the browser window within which they are viewing the survey. Participants who complete the survey may also opt into receiving a prototype of the tool that we produce by early May of 2017 using the insights we gather from the survey.
Participation Requirements
We invite those who are at least 18 years of age and are associated with an organization that is involved in any form of activism.
To aid in understanding whether you might fit the study criteria, we define “activism” as any direct engagement in advocating for one side of a controversial issue and/or bringing forward new information that impacts the issue. This includes the work of lawyers and journalists, as well as the work of employees/members of advocacy organizations who are responsible for pushing the organization’s agenda forward.
Expected Time Commitment
We expect this survey to take no more than 15 minutes of your time.
Risks
The expected risks and discomfort associated with participation in this study are no greater than those ordinarily encountered in daily life or during other online activities.
Benefits
Upon completion of the survey, you may opt into receiving a prototype of the tool that provides recommendations on cybersecurity tools informed by your and others' survey responses.
Compensation
Participants may enter a raffle to win one of six $50 Amazon gift cards after full completion of this survey.
Confidentiality
The survey form will not collect any personal identifiers (beyond age and general domain of work). When you complete the survey, the last page will display a link that redirects you to another survey where you can enter the raffle for a gift card and opt into receiving a prototype of the tool when it is completed. We will not link your email address with your survey responses.
Right to Ask Questions & Contact Information
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about the study before, during, or after participation, please contact the research team at privacyresearch@cmu.edu.
Voluntary Participation
Your participation in this research is completely voluntary, and you may discontinue participation at any time during the survey.
