The AVMA proudly supports the annual Animal Welfare Judging and Assessment Contest (AWJAC), a contest designed to help students understand how animal welfare is assessed in applied settings. The contest includes some welfare assessments based on direct observations and others based on hypothetical scenarios. The following scenario is a simplified version of the type of assessment the students learn to perform. Correct answers for this scenario were determined by a panel of judges during the actual contest; a different panel of experts might or might not come to the same conclusions.
Take the quiz! You will be given ten ways to compare the welfare provided to dogs in two fictional situations: a police dog and a guide dog.
Note: these are entirely fictitious scenarios, meant to educate and increase awareness of animal welfare scenarios. The photos are taken from a variety of situations, and neither facility in this scenario exists as presented here.
