Background:Food losses and waste are a significant global issue impacting approximately 1.3 billion tonnes or one third of our food supply. Australian losses in grain, horticulture, meat, fish and seafood production were $2.9 billion in 2014-2015, with $1.8 billion attributed to horticultural losses. This is a major waste of nutrients, energy and water which translates to loss of opportunity for industry. Mapping of why and where the food losses occurs in the various horticultural supply chains is an important first step towards developing solutions. CSIRO has developed this questionnaire to underpin the mapping of what losses currently occurs in different horticultural supply chains and to understand and develop a coordinated strategy to capture value back to growers, packers, processors and distributors within the supply chain.
Research Participant Consent FormFruit and Vegetable Food Losses in Australia Survey
Dear Participant
CSIRO invites you to take part in a survey about food losses and vegetable waste in Australia’s fruit and vegetable supply chains. The survey is seeking data from growers, packers, grower-shippers, distributors, and food processing facilities across Australia to map the amounts of losses produced in specific locations across the supply chain network.
This information will help us capture the regional opportunities for food loss reduction and value addition of lost produce during and post-harvest. We are currently investigating the development of novel high value stable products and ingredients from potentially lost produce and by-products obtained on-farm and during processing. The food loss maps obtained from this exercise will be used to inform the creation of regional hubs for value addition and the focused discussions with producer clusters, local and state governments willing to co-fund innovation initiatives for value capture.
In return, CSIRO will provide you with a diagnostic of your food loss status in comparison with the average national benchmark nationally and state wide.
Completing the survey should take less than 10 minutes as long as you have the information available. There are 10 questions dedicated to each sector of the supply chain pre-retail. Your participation is completely voluntary and you are free to withdraw by stopping at any time. If you decide to withdraw from the survey, any responses you have provided up to that point will be deleted. Because all the questions are important to us and to your future innovation potential we would require them all completed.
We will request your business contact details for mapping purposes. We would also appreciate the opportunity for follow up questions in case clarification is needed.
All information collected through the survey will be anonymous and used by CSIRO for research purposes only. Data will be reported in an aggregate form to ensure participants are not individually identifiable. The data may also be kept and used by CSIRO in a de-identified form for future research on this topic.
Regional aggregated results from this study will be published in scientific papers, public reports and conference presentations. A summary of the findings will also be made available to participants on completion of the study. Please email Pablo.Juliano@csiro.au if you would like to receive a copy of this summary report.
