The AVMA proudly supports the annual Animal Welfare Judging and Assessment Contest (AWJAC), a contest designed to help students understand how animal welfare is assessed in applied settings. The contest includes some welfare assessments based on direct observations and others based on hypothetical scenarios. The following scenario is a simplified version of the type of assessment the students learn to perform.
Take the quiz! You will be given ten ways to compare the welfare provided to heavy horses in two fictional situations: rural farming and city carriage use.
Note: these are entirely fictitious scenarios, meant to educate and increase awareness of animal welfare scenarios. The photos are taken from a variety of situations, and neither facility in this scenario exists as presented here.
