The financial processes of SD#83 are the responsibility of the Board of Trustees, Central Administration and Superintendent of Schools. In the last five years, School District #83 financial reports show that surplus operating funds of $10 Million were transferred to capital funds, and those sums were subsequently used to pay for the construction of the District Education and Support Center (DESC).
Three Trustees have given notice of resignation, and a by-election must be held for those vacancies (to be completed by end of June 2016).
An appointed special advisor is currently conducting a review of the governance, accountability and financial/capital planning of the Board of Trustees (report due May 20, 2016).
The purpose of this survey is to collect public opinion on the overall satisfaction with the Board Chair, Vice Board Chair, remaining 4 Trustees, and Superintendent of Schools and the public's opinion on whether or not they should continue to act or resign from their respective roles.
As of April 27, 2016, 27 of the province’s 60 school districts (including School District #83) have a combined shortfall of $77.17 Million.
Vancouver School Board of Trustees voted NO to making $24Million in cuts, and instead will submit an unbalanced budget to the Ministry of Education.
Saanich School Board of Trustees voted to submit a balanced budget with a line item “anticipated revenue from government $984,000.00”
The Provincial Budget is not final until voted on in legislation, June 30.
“If parents and others want to continue to mobilize, writing to the premier and MLAs to say that this budget, particularly in a year which is predicting a surplus and a healthy economy, should be one that prioritizes public education.” (May 4, 2016 Vancouver Sun)
