Whitman Choral Cup 2017

Whitman Choral Cup

Beta Theta Pi has been a singing fraternity almost from its birth. It has emphasized the idea contained in the words, "a singing chapter is a good chapter." Because of this deep-seated feeling, we encourage our members to perform on their campus and within the community. The Whitman Chapter has a historical reputation for its choral abilities, so this award is named in its honor. It is presented to the best recorded performance by a chapter. Chapters typically perform a traditional Beta song.

Eligibility: All chapters and colonies are eligible to apply for this award.

Criteria: This award will be judged by three knowledgeable musicians. An entry will be judged as follows:  30% interpretation, 30% tone and balance, 30% enunciation and clarity and 10% arrangement.

Special Notes:  One chapter will be recognized each year. The award is the Whitman Choral Cup, a beautiful double dragon brass trophy carrying the eight-sided Grecian shield. The Cup goes home with the winning chapter.

Questions: Questions about this award can be directed to Dan Grainger (dan.grainger@beta.org; 800-800-BETA).

To complete this application, you must have three recorded Beta songs that meet the following criteria:

  1. Choral group members must be undergraduates or alumni (but the number of alumni may not exceed 10% of the total number of singers).
  2. At least 25% of the chapter members must sing.
  3. There are to be no solos and at least three voices must be singing at all times. There may be only one accompanying instrument.
  4. Songs may be repeated every other year.
  5. Songs are to be submitted in the application with a statement by the chapter president that all rules and regulations were followed.
